Where Did Your Dreams Go?
Remember when you were a kid, you could lie on your back looking at the clouds moving lazily across the sky and say, when I grow up, I’m going to do this, and I’m going to do that? In our diaries, we would eagerly write how we would be a doctor or the first black female president or become a millionaire fashion designer. Remember that?
So can I ask you, when was the last time you dreamed? Don’t answer that because I know it’s been a while. You grew up, and life hit, so you stopped dreaming. Besides, someone told you it was stupid to want to become a famous makeup artist or a dancer on Broadway, so you said yeah, that was just a pipe dream anyway. You gave up on your dreams!
Girl, where did your dreams go? Are you living an unflattering life where every day is the same? Are you struggling in a dead-end job that you absolutely hate, but you tough it out because you have a mortgage to pay and a car note to make?
I was right there with you until I started dreaming again. I dared to believe that there was something more out there. I decided that I didn’t have to be unhappy and to work a dead-end job. I took my life, emphases on “my life,” and decided that I wanted something different. I started dreaming again. I went back to a company that I started 20 years ago but let go because life happened. I started believing that, yes, I deserve to be an executive in that company. Yes, I deserve to drive a pink Cadillac. And you know what? I’m on the path to get that Cadillac!
Y’all, I started believing in myself again. I have hope. I have energy. I have a life. However, beginning this quest for a better me and working with Mary Kay Cosmetics, I’ve encountered so many women, especially women of color, who are afraid to make a change or are too beat down to believe in themselves. My sisters, you deserve to live your best life. Don’t give up on yourself or your dreams. Fight for them. You deserve the moon and then some!
My advice to you is really getting still, take a sabbatical even and go deep within. Find out what it is you like and what you genuinely want to do. Don’t say you don’t have the time. You can take 24 hours and go somewhere alone and figure this out! Your life depends on it. Your family’s lives depend on it. Just know you are worth it!
