I was recently conversing with one of my male friends, and the gist was he was confused about what women wanted. He stated that he couldn't figure it out. I looked at him and said, "That's because most women don't know what they want themselves." By the expression on his face, I could tell that this was a new revelation for him. I explained that most women, and even men, do not take the time to figure out what they truly want. Not the surface stuff, like a job, car, or what neighborhood they want to live in, but the stuff that makes our hearts soar. We don't take the time to find out what makes us tick, what makes us get out of bed every day. Or here's a big one: what makes your soul sing? Who are we at the very core of our being?
This is my first blog of the new year, so I'm asking you: Who are you? What makes your soul sing? I know it's heavy for the new year, right? Well, it's high time we figure out what we want, especially as African American women. We have been on the front lines of everything, for everyone, for every cause for so long that we've lost ourselves in the mix. It's ok to put the cross down for a moment and take care of you. You must figure out what you stand for. You must find out what you want. You must figure out who you are at your core existence; otherwise, these next four years will be miserable.
Hey, I'm on this journey with you. I like to believe that I am "Woke," and yes, I intended to use that word. But truthfully, I have a long way to go. I've been on my discovery journey for a long time. I've discovered some wonderful things about myself and some not-so-wonderful stuff, but I'm still at it. I will not give up until I'm woke, mindful, present, and an active participant in my own life! How about you?
