Sister Friends
The Whine-Wine Blog
Because every rant, rave or whine goes down better with a great glass of wine!!
Friendships are an interesting beast, especially well into adulthood. We all have our Ride-or-die girls who are down for whatever. We have our sister-mother-coach confidant friend who’s talked us off many a ledge. We some semi-friend semi-acquaintance you know the one who you’re not quite sure about. Getting older, you reflect on how meaningful these friendships are. I know at least for me healthy friendships have been beneficial. I have been fortunate to have some beautiful, amazing sisters; biological and not, in my life.
But what happens when you don’t have this in your life? What do you do? Do you suffer in silence? Do you go out and try to cultivate friendships? Well, one of my beautify sister-friends sent me a text that provided the link to the following podcast:
Therapy for Black Girls – Podcast Episode 118 “Making Friends As An Adult.”
This podcast has some good incites on how we develop friendships and gave some pointers on how to create healthy relationships. One thing that really stood out to me was the therapist said that we put so much work into developing romantic relationships but just let out friendships go trusting they will grow organically. Which is so true. Our bonds are equally as important.
Think about that point for a moment. Do you cultivate the relationships with your best girlfriends? Do you put in the same work to keeping the relationship vibrant and healthy as you do your romantic ones? I know I’m guilty of just assuming my friends will always be there. I have been making a concerted effort to reach out to my close friends checking on them just because. It’s easy to reach out to someone because you want them to help you with something and I’m sure your besties don’t mind. But think about this, it makes you feel good when someone calls you up just to say hi, how are you and genuinely want to know how you’re doing. So if that makes you feel good, return the favor. We need each other and the only way we are going to survive this life is if we uplift, esteem and celebrate each other!
Until next time, enjoy the journey!
