Don't Settle

Don’t Settle!

It’s only February and already this year is trying especially at work. Don’t get me wrong, I have a decent job. But is decent good enough? Some say yes in this climate and time in our history. However, after the week that I had I have to beg to differ. Let me tell you about my week.

First someone, above my pay grade dropped the ball on a computer program that was necessary to allow a thousand or more clients to access pertinent reports. Since that wasn’t done it was up to me and my co-worker to update the reports and send out manually in three days! That co-worker had a family emergency and was out of the office those three days. Management recruited some of my team-members to assist me, however they felt that the work was beneath them and didn’t really want to assist. And yeah, I get that. No one wants to be pulled into something when they have a heavy workload, especially if the situation could have been avoided. So, for the past week I was working on the project, handling the work of two people and dealing with cranky clients who didn’t have their reports on time.

(I understand the cranky customers and don’t blame them at all. They were promised something and it wasn’t delivered.) Needless to say, I drank the whole damn bottle of wine!!!

All of that drama got me to thinking, should I be settling for mediocre? I have bills like everyone else that have to be paid, hence the job. But should I be going for broke trying to make my writing dreams come true? I heard a successful entrepreneur say, she would break the bank, run up the credit card, do whatever was necessary to continue pursuing her dreams. Pause for reaction and reflective thought.

This is definitely something to contemplate. A decent job doesn’t sustain you when you have a hard day at work. Decent doesn’t get your creative juices flowing. Decent doesn’t excite you.

I always tell the young people that I’m blessed to mentor, to follow their dreams don’t get stuck doing something you hate even if it’s a decent job! Maybe it’s time to follow my own advice and pursue my God given purpose with abandon!

Until next time, enjoy the journey!
